I Think I'm the Girl Who Uses Too Many Smiley Faces

i was texting someone the other night, and when i looked back at our conversation, i realized that i ended over half of my texts with a smiley face.

what. on. earth.

as someone with a degree in education, i pride myself in having good text etiquette…i never use terms like "lol" and i always spell out "you", "for", "are", etc.  even when someone broke into my house with my mom and i at home and i was hiding in my room texting anyone i knew for help (which, yes, was as terrifying as it sounds…i really should tell that story on here sometime), i typed in complete sentences, used proper punctuation, and spelled out each word.

but it seems, despite my quest for good texting grammar, i think i have become the girl who uses too many smiley faces.

maybe it's no big deal.  or maybe it's like that person on your facebook feed who ends every sentence with 16 exclamation points.

i could jesus juke this post with some deep thought about how using too many smiley faces eventually makes them worthless or that i hide my real emotions behind them or some contrived thing like that, but let's be real, it's just smiley faces, so i'm going to leave it as what it is.

i'm the girl who uses smiley faces.  a lot.  and if you send me a text, you'll probably get one back, complete with a smiley face.  please be a friend and tell me i'm not alone in this.

  1. You're not alone :) When I look back to my texts/emails, they are filled with smiley faces and exclamation points (never more than one at the end of a sentence though.) It feels silly, but that's my way of showing happiness/kindness through a text-only conversation. So keep smiley facing it up!

    1. haha…I like to think of it that way too…it's my way of making sure people know I have a smile on my face while I'm typing! :) (see?)

  2. I'm the girl that ends every sentence with an exclamation mark. I think it's because I'm always so excited when someone actually texts me. I have actually had to stop myself from adding one on the end of something sad I said once

    1. When you read things in your head, do you acknowledge punctuation? I do, and I think that's why I notice it so much…I pause at commas (even when they're placed incorrectly), and the inflection of sentences that I read goes up at exclamation marks…haha

  3. Haha, love it!
I always include a lot of smiley faces because it's really hard to read emotion in text, so I feel like I just want people to know I love them, and am happy, and want to hang out for real....so use a smiley! :)
    That story sounds terrifying!

  4. It's too hard to NOT use them with all of the great emoji apps out there. I have a blast using smilies and adding them to my tweets and instagrams. Guilty as charged!

  5. I love the smiles too!!! and adding exclamation points!!! ;) Nothing wrong with lots of fun emotions in texts! I think it helps because we talk so much via text but we cannot hear voice inflections or moods. I think it helps reflect your tone of voice!

    1. Very true…I definitely am the guiltiest of using them when I'm really trying to convey my expression/emotions.
