Blogging // 5 Things Every Awesome Blog Post Has

you probably know right off the bat whether you're going to be into a blog post or not.  let's face it:  there are a ton of really awesome blogs and posts out there, and a ton of really not awesome ones.  and if you're an avid blog reader, and, well, human, chances are you are going to skip over those not awesome posts.

while i'm certainly no expert at blogging, i have been doing it for a little while and have focused lately on sharing a few tips and tricks that i have found to be helpful in navigating the vast sea of the world wide web.  and while i don't think that there's some "secret formula" to blogging, i do think that there are some things that you can make sure you're doing in order to get as much response and interaction and readership on each post as possible.

disclaimer:  this list is not comprehensive.  in fact, you could probably draw up a list of 50 things every great blog post has!  things like "no spelling or grammar errors" would probably be on that list. but that list would also feel overwhelming to a girl like me, so here are five things that i personally believe every great blog post has:

1.  a great title image // there should be an eye-catching image right at the top of your post (and bonus points if it has text on it that will give your reader a quick snapshot of what they're about to read)!  these posts also solve a dual purpose:  not only do they welcome the reader into the post, they also are great for social media sharing (think pinterest!) so that your readers can save a post to refer to later!

2.  a clear and focused message // i like a cute little funny anecdotal rabbit trail as much as the next person, but make sure you pull it back together.  have a clear, focused message for every post you write.  if your post is all over the place, it's going to leave your reader going "huh?" and wondering why they took the time to read it.  instead, be sure to take time to craft your posts.  read over them a few times, read them out loud, have a friend read them.

3.  a sense of confidence // be you!  i think a version of this tip makes it into every blogging post i write, but that just shows you how important it is!  when you're being you and being authentic, that will show itself and you'll come across as confident.  the most confident posts that i've written have been ones that i've really written in my own voice.  and those post are also often the ones i'm most proud of!

4.  a few helpful and relevant links // specifically, links that lead the reader further into your blog (see the bottom of this post, for example!).  if you're writing a blog post about that crazy-good homemade pizza that you made for dinner and have a recipe for homemade sauce, link it up!  "internal" links (links that lead readers to another post or page in your site) help readers discover more of your blog and keep them around longer.

5.  an invitation for the reader // ask a question, host a link-up, invite readers to share your posts.  give your readers a clear way to interact with you and then make sure you interact back and keep the conversation going!

what are some things you think that every great blog post has?

  2. I love your blogging tips! When I started my blog it was strictly to have a "journal" for myself and know it has turned into a little more. My grammar and spelling are horrible, but I have really tried to improve this over the year.

  3. Awesome tips, Betsy! It took me a long time before I caught on with making sure I had a great image in each of my posts, but I finally learned my lesson and never post anything without at least one image!

  9. I always love your tips, Bets. I agree with Anne too- having an image that kind of goes along with the post is nice (plus, if you can pin it on Pinterest, even better!)

  13. #3 is my favorite! Writing my blog has given me a lot of confidence, which translates into the way I write.

  14. This is a great list! I especially like that you pointed out blog posts should have a clear purpose. I feel like even if you're just telling a story about your day, there should be some REASON why I should want to read about that. I think that's really difficult to do in the lifestyle blogging community sometimes.

  15. This list is AWESOME, and oh so very true! I am also a fan of the clear purpose. It's so hard to read a bunch of rambling unorganized mumbo jumbo! Thanks for sharing this :)

  16. I LOVE following authentic blogs. There is a big difference when someone writes just to promote a product, or when someone writes from the heart. You can only say so many times in one month 'This is the best eye liner ever!'...without losing some followers...

  17. You are so true about these things. I love reading blogs where I almost feel as though I am talking to the blogger. I love when they write passionately about what they are trying to convey. Thanks for sharing.

  22. I'm trying to add more links, but most of the time, I have no idea as to whether or not I have a clear message. Sometimes I just ramble.

    ReplyDelete
  23. i totally do too sometimes! (and sometimes, it's totally fine to do that!)
i always try to sum up every post in 3-5 points....if i can do that and the points seem to convey a unified message, then we're good! if they're all over the place, then it's time to edit.

  24. i'm definitely not an expert, but i love writing blogging posts like this...it's fun to share what i've learned/noticed over the years!

  27. ugh, SO well said! haha...i just have a really hard time connecting with blogs that only ever write product reviews. i love making some cash off of my blog too, but i personally enjoy connecting with readers more than anything!

  36. I pinned this its so great

  37. Great tips here, thanks for sharing! :-)

  38. Great tips! Internal links are the bomb. When I'm brainstorming ideas, I sometimes think about what else I can link up to in my own blog.

    ReplyDelete
  39. love all your blogging tips! Although, i have to slightly disagree with the the text on the image comment in number 1. I totally agree, it gives readers a snapshot of what they are about to read and is great for media sharing but i don't like when every single blog post has a title image with text on it. i've come across certain posts where they have text on the title photo and it's definitely not necessary to the post. it's a little too redundant for me. for some posts, the text on the title image is a definite must. for example, this post, the title text is great! I guess what i mean to say is "use text in title image when complimentary to post" haha Totally my opinion though, from a readers standpoint.

  40. lovely tips! I love these key points you put in - makes it helpful when writing posts ♥

    ReplyDelete
  44. thanks so much liv! photos, in my opinion, bring life to blog posts!

    ReplyDelete
  45. i totally see what you're saying! i suppose it's not quite as important to have text on your photos as it is to just have great photos!

    ReplyDelete
  46. me too! i love when i can provide some links to other things i've written!

    ReplyDelete
  47. i definitely do too! but the work is totally worth it!

    ReplyDelete
  51. I recently started adding an invitation to readers at the end of my posts. It's a great way to have a discussion with your readers and learn more about them.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Creating consistently engaging posts is a major goal of mine! I also think that great posts need to be well-organized and have great photography!

    ReplyDelete
  53. I agree for me great image and a question at the end captures me more as well as content obviously

    ReplyDelete
  54. Awesome, awesome tips (and you did all of them in this post)!
One thing that I would add is social sharing buttons are important. I don't know if it is my browser, but I don't ever see any on your's. Is that on purpose?

    ReplyDelete
  55. Great tips Betsy! These are so helpful and I will absolutely be keeping them in mind with each new post I write. :)

    ReplyDelete
  56. I totally agree Sarah! Social Sharing buttons are definitely important...and no, it's not your browser! haha...the theme I have installed on my blog didn't come with them built in and I've been meaning to figure out how to reinstall them but I just keep forgetting to! Thanks for the reminder though :)
