Aleshea's Homemade Apple Pie

I'm excited to welcome Aleshea to the blog today to share her homemade apple pie recipe with you all!  Aleshea's the Texas girl behind Glitz & Grits and I love stopping by her blog for a big helping of all things Southern (my wanna-be-southern-girl heart is in heaven!).  So give her a warm welcome and enjoy her apple pie!


Hey girl Hey. I'm Aleshea from Glitz & Grits. Pronounced like Alicia. Growin' up I always joked my parents gave me a commin' name with a messed up spellin'. My parents weren't too fond of that joke. I like sweet tea and think the Mangoes are out to get me. WAIT...WHAT? I never was good at the awkward intros. So, I guess I'll hit the high notes. I'm a Texan. Doesn't that say it all. 

As for Glitz & Grits. Glitz: The people, places, stories and things that make up my South. Grits: The food.  Down here in The South, food is our love language. How we communicate. Bein' in the kitchen has to be one of my favorite things to do next to explorin' Texas. 

I've give y'all my homemade apple pie. Seriously, y'all, it's like the easiest thing you'll ever make. Drop me a line if you make it and let me know how it turns out. You can find me on social media @glitzngrits 


Ingredients:
Dough:
2 cups flour
1/4 cup of Crisco 
teaspoon of baking soda
1 teaspoon of  baking powder

1 teaspoon salt
About 1/2-2/3 hot water 

Fillin:
1/2 cup of brown sugar
1/2 cup unsalted butter
4 tablespoons of flour
1/2 granulated sugar
1/4 cups of water
6 Granny Smith Apples chopped



Directions:
First we will make the dough. 

1. Mix the flour with the baking soda, baking powder and salt.
2. Fork the Crisco shortening in.
Once everything is worked in mix with your hands until it becomes the consistency of corn meal.  
3. Slowly add the hot water.
4. Mix with a wooden spoon and then your hands until the dough looks and feels like pie dough
5. Place a damp towel over the bowl and let it sit for 20 minutes on the counter. I made two batches of dough. 

Now we will do the pie fillin'.

1. Melt in the butter over the stove. Add the sugar, brown sugar, and water and bring to a boil.
2 Once it starts to boil reduce and then let sit. 
3. By this time your dough should be ready. Roll it out and place it in your pie dish. Cut off the excess if desired. 
4. Place the cute apples in the uncooked pie crust.
5. Cover the top with a lattice top. To make a lattice top roll out your second heap of dough. Cut strips and interweave them in between.
6. Take the sugar fillin you heated and pout in between the pie and all over the top.
7. Bake at 325 for about 45 mins.
