In the wake of Friday's tragedy, many bloggers have deemed today as a "day of silence" for remembering the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting.

I've chosen to instead, post a quote and reflection on remembrance.

As a soon-to-be elementary school teacher, this shooting hit close to home.  My mom and I were sitting in our kitchen last night talking about how one of the victims hid her first graders in cabinets before the gunman came barging into her classroom.  I commented that I wasn't sure what I'd do in that situation.  My mom said "Your instincts would kick in.  By then, you'd love each one of those kids."  And I think she's right.  While schools are still one of the safest places in the country that kids will ever go, incidents like this prove that nowhere is untouchable.

Obviously, Friday's tragedy is heartbreaking.  But God is present in this.  And we must not forget that while we may not understand why it happened, we must have faith that God is speaking through it.

On a side note:  If you're interested, I encourage you to read this article about mental health in our country.  I think that one of the things that could come from this tragedy is a more open discussion about the state of our mental health system.

  1. That is an awesome quote and so true. Good for you for posting it! I agree 100% percent. =)

  2. This is beautiful. I love that quote!

  3. I've been a Toddler Teacher for most of my days. Hearing about innocent children being killed, it's sad. I remember I was on Facebook the other day and someone posted tons of photos of the boys and girls from the kindergarten class - I had to log off. It made me sick to my stomach. I've always been in love with children! They're so sweet and innocent. How could someone harm them?

I pray for the families who lost a child or their loved one due to this horrible tragedy.

  4. I was glad to see your mention on mental health, as so many people are focusing on gun control laws as if it was the only issue at play.

  5. I couldn't agree with you on all of that anymore. Great post Betsy!
